What Does It Mean for My Eye Care Practice?

Google+ for consumers is going the way of the dinosaurs for the broader public. You might be wondering what impact this will have on your practice’s social media presence, particularly if you posted there frequently in the hopes of reaching a wider audience.

Why? When?

Google+ was never a huge success. Google failed in making much headway in a space dominated by Facebook, and to a lesser degree, Twitter.

It really only worked in corporate settings, and it will continue as an enterprise product.  

But as a social media network, very few people ever actually used Google+. As Google said themselves in their announcement, “The consumer version of Google+ currently has low usage and engagement: 90 percent of Google+ user sessions are less than five seconds.”

If that performance weren’t terrible enough, recent revelations of a serious security breach of consumer data from within Google+ pretty much sealed the deal for a social media network that never took off.

While the exact timing is not yet clear, Google will be shutting down Google+ as a consumer social media network over the coming months.

How Will This Impact My Optometric Practice?

Drumroll please...pretty much nothing! That’s right. GMB (Google My Business) Google Maps, Gmail, and other Google apps are staying put. As Google+ sails off into that good night, the only real bad news here is that if you spent a lot of time building up your Google+ presence with posts it was mostly a waste of time since no one was using it in the first place! The actual impact on your practice moving forward is probably zilch.

Now, you might be thinking, “But what about my pictures? My posts? What about my followers? Or, um “circles” or whatever they were called…”

The straight-up answer is that they are all going to the great beyond where Napster still operates. But the only thing you stand to lose, if anything, are photos that were posted to Google+ and never saved to Google Photos or Google Drive or uploaded to your GMB. Anything that you feel is important to keep should be downloaded and saved elsewhere. But unless we’re talking about really unique or special moments, practice images should be updated pretty regularly anyway.

So Where Should I Be Posting?

Every social media channel has its own core audience of users, some of whom are relevant to your practice. But let’s face it, managing Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Snapchat, and Instagram is a lot. Unless you have the time and energy to do all the networks right, it’s best to focus on the social media platform that works best for engaging the most potential new patients, particularly young families. At EyeCarePro, we recommend Facebook. It’s better to do one social media network really well than to do all of them badly. Facebook gives the best bang for your buck in terms of your time and sheer volume of users relevant to your practice. At the same time, you should be uploading all images, videos, and posts onto your GMB listing.
